Doctors at Pretoria University believe it’s the first time in this way that a country in the Western hemisphere has witnessed a multi-hospital death of an opioid user within an hour of receiving the drug.

“That is just not acceptable to the system,” Dr Gaudino said.

A police investigation will examine the evidence but no arrests have been made in the case at this stage.
